Reception (ID 1278)

Welcome

Welcome to Reception Class at Booth Wood Academy!

We are delighted to welcome you to our webpage. This is a very special year where children begin their exciting journey of learning through play, exploration, and discovery.

In our classroom we create a safe, happy, and nurturing environment where every child feels valued and confident to try new things. Throughout the year, the children will develop their independence, make new friendships, and build the foundations for reading, writing, maths, and creativity. One of the most important things we learn together is kindness. We encourage the children to care for one another, share, help their friends, and celebrate each other’s achievements. Building positive relationships and learning how to be kind members of our class community is at the heart of everything we do.

We believe that learning works best when school and home work together. We are always available to talk with and support parents and carers. If you ever have any questions, worries, or would simply like to discuss your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to speak to us. We value open communication and are always happy to help.

We can’t wait for a fantastic year of learning and fun!

(Arrival time is 8:40am - 8:45am through the side gate. Home time is 3:10pm through the side gate.)

PE Information

Our PE day is Tuesday. PE is led by our fantastic sports coach, Mr Wolfe, and the children always have a wonderful time developing their physical skills, confidence, and teamwork.

Physical Education is a very important part of learning in Reception. Through PE, children develop their fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, balancing, throwing, and catching. These activities help build strength, coordination, and confidence, while also encouraging teamwork, perseverance, and a love of being active.

Children should come to school every Tuesday wearing appropriate PE kit. During the Autumn and Spring terms, PE takes place in the school hall. In the Summer term, lessons will usually take place outside on the playground or the school field, weather permitting.

For safety reasons, children must not wear any jewellery during PE and long hair should be tied back.

PE Kit consists of the following:

  • White t shirt or house coloured t shirt
  • Black joggers or leggings in colder months
  • Black shorts in warmer months
  • Trainers or plimsolls (plimsolls are only suitable for indoor PE therefore a change of footwear will be required before and after our PE lesson)
  • Black jumper or hoodie

Supporting Learning at Home

There are many simple and enjoyable ways you can support your child’s learning at home. In Reception, much of our learning happens through play, conversation, and everyday experiences.

  • Reading:
Try to read with your child every day if possible. Share their school reading book as well as other books they enjoy. Talk about the pictures, characters, and what might happen next. Encouraging a love of stories is a wonderful way to build early reading skills.
  • Writing:
Encourage your child to practise mark making and early writing in fun ways. This might include drawing pictures and talking about them, writing their name, making shopping lists, writing cards, or labelling their drawings. Holding a pencil correctly and building hand strength through activities like colouring, cutting, and playdough are also very helpful.
  • Maths:
Maths can be practised through everyday activities. You might count steps as you walk, count toys when tidying up, spot numbers when you are out and about, or talk about shapes and patterns. Simple games such as counting objects, comparing amounts, or recognising numbers help build early maths confidence.
  • Language and Communication:
Talking with your child is one of the most important ways to support their learning. Encourage conversations about their day, ask questions, and listen carefully to their ideas. Singing songs, sharing rhymes, and telling stories together also help develop strong language skills.

Most importantly, keep learning fun, positive, and full of encouragement.

What to Bring to School Each Day

Please ensure your child brings the following items to school every day:

Book Bag
Children should bring their book bag to school each day with their reading books and reading diary inside. This allows us to change books and communicate about your child’s reading progress.

Change of Clothes
Please provide a labelled change of clothes that can be kept in school. This is helpful in case of accidents, spillages, or messy play activities.

Weather-Appropriate Clothing
We spend lots of time learning and playing outdoors in Reception, so it is important that children come to school with suitable clothing for the weather. This includes an appropriate coat and suitable footwear so they can comfortably take part in outdoor learning.

Forest School Information

Friday mornings is Forest School. Your child will need to come to school in suitable outdoor clothing such as jogging bottoms and a long sleeved top every Friday. We have wellies for everyone at school but you may send your child with their own to change into if you wish. As the weather turns colder and wetter, all children will be provided with full waterproofs to keep them clean and dry. Please remember joggers or leggings are still required in the Summer months, even when the sun is shining, to cover bare legs amongst the growing plants and trees.

Celebrating Success

In Reception, we love celebrating the children’s achievements and recognising the wonderful progress they make. Success can come in many forms — learning a new skill, showing kindness to a friend, trying something new, or working hard on an activity. We make sure these special moments are recognised and celebrated in our classroom to help build children’s confidence and pride in their learning.

We also encourage families to share successes from home. This might be something your child is proud of, a new skill they have learned, an achievement in a club or activity, or a special moment you would like us to celebrate with the class. Children love sharing their achievements, and it helps them feel valued both at home and at school.

Celebrating successes together helps children develop confidence, motivation, and a positive attitude towards learning.

Year 6

Year 6 (ID 1285)

 PE
We will be having two PE lessons each week, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. These will be taught by our sports coach, Mr Wolfe.

It is very important that your child has a suitable indoor and outdoor PE kit with trainers. Please make sure that your child's PE kit is clearly named and they arrive to school wearing their PE kit. PE kit includes a t-shirt in the colour of their team, dark shorts or jogging bottoms, trainers and a Booth Wood fleece.

Homework
Children will receive two pieces of homework each week which will be linked to current learning in maths and English/grammar. They will receive this on a Friday and have a week to complete it and return. They should be able to complete it independently or with little support, but please encourage your child to speak to me if they have any problems. In addition to this, we ask that all pupils practise their spellings and times tables regularly and read at least 4 times a week.

Twinkl Spelling helps children to practise their spellings via simple online games.

Once your child has their login information they can access their online games via twinkl.co.uk/spelling/play. The class will be tested every Friday. The idea is that your child practises their spellings at home via the online 'Twinkl Spelling' resource as described above. If you do not have access to this, then please speak to the class teacher.

After the February half-term break, our spellings will focus on key spelling rules in preparation for transition to secondary school.

Times Tables Rock Stars is a wonderful maths resource for your child to learn and practice their times tables to improve fluency and speed. It is expected that all Year 6 pupils should know their times tables by heart and it impacts greatly on their ability to complete other types of maths questions. The fun online resource is incredibly effective and highly recommended. It has been thoroughly enjoyed by many previous pupils in Year 6.

Things we need

  • A bottle of water (no juice please in case of sticky spillages!).
  • A healthy snack at break.
  • A bag with reading book and reading record. Year 6 pupils may bring their own stationary to school if they wish but we will provide everything they need.

Celebrating success!
Year 6 is full of amazing children and we want to celebrate every success and achievement during this year both inside and outside of school. We would love to hear about all the amazing things your child does, so please tell us about them.
